Prospector Catalog/Reference Committee

July 12, 2001

The Prospector Cataloging/Reference Committee met at the Alliance on Thursday July 12, 2001 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Present were: Helen Reed, Florence Jones, Judith Heck, Cynthia Wilson, Sandy Arnesen, Joan Beam, George Machovec, and Bill Garrison.

1.  Updates/Announcements

Gold Rush version 1.0 will be released on Monday July 16th.  It includes a links to both Prospector and the library’s local catalog.  George asked if we want a link from Prospector to Gold Rush.  The committee will make a decision at the September meeting.

The Prospector Document Delivery Committee will meet July 18th to work on the annual reconciliation.  All libraries will be provided lists of missing Prospector materials and will search the shelves in each library for the books.  George will run a net loss report.

2.  Bcode3=o

Libraries using bcode3=o need to check to see if it is being mapped correctly in Prospector.  Sandy Arnesen discovered records with bcode3=o were showing as a Prospector Resource at the Prospector site.  Contact III if your library is experiencing this problem.

3.  Endeavor/III

George met with Jane Burke, and Sandi Westall at the ALA meeting.  Jane gave Sandi a confidentially agreement.  George had a conference call with Endeavor people to walk them through the specifications.  He will have another conference call with III and Endeavor on July 19th.  He expects to lock down a schedule and hopes to have the two Endeavor library sites up on Prospector by the end of the year.

4.  INN-Reach Release 2001

George said that release 2001 is available, but he doesn’t expect to upgrade until after July 23 when Ann Rakes is back from vacation.

5.  netLibrary

George reported that the netLibrary patron driven acquisitions model has been turned off because of cost.  The Alliance libraries now own 7,011 titles.  Jim Williams met with representatives from each Alliance library to discuss how to proceed with netLibrary purchases.  The group is considering a modified patron driven model.  A conspectus will be developed based on subject, publisher, date, and cost.  Interested libraries met on Monday July 16th and were asked to fill out a profiling form.  Denver Public Library will not participate in the same way.  DPL will create a list of titles they want to buy.  The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center is the only institution that has chosen to opt out of the group purchase of netLibrary materials.

6.  Prospector

Two new loan rules have been created in Prospector.  One will be used for media (videos, CDs, etc.), which  allows for a one-week circulation with no renewals and a $100 lost item fee.   The second loan rule is for PASCAL journals, allowing a seven-day circulation with no renewals and a $400 lost item fee.  Both rules will be activated on August 1st.

Prospector advanced key word searching capabilities have been tabled.

Loading digital images will be tabled until Prospector has the ability to limit by format.

7.  Training issues

Judith Heck reported that classes are going well for DPL staff.  She asked about the ability to move failed Prospector searches up to OCLC.

Cynthia Wilson announced that Jefferson County is sponsoring a class taught by Nancy Olson on cataloging audiovisual materials.  Registration information will be posted on the Alliance cataloging listserv.
