1. Updates
Resignation Amrita has taken a
position at Gettysburg College and has therefore resigned from the Prospector
Committee.
Prospector
Downtime Prospector
suffered major hardware and software problems in the last 3 weeks. The machine crashed several times. Reboots worked for a while but the crashes
reoccurred. III sent replacement
hardware and the system was rebuilt from a backup tape. The CARL interface on this tape was an old
version, so patching in all the correct required quite a bit more time. The Qwest problems during this time
presented further problems with Prospector service.
Because of this whole experience, III wants to
upgrade soon to 2001. III presently
plans to do this the 2nd week of June, the final date will be scheduled based
on Alliance staff availability.
Endeavor III has sent a letter
of confidentiality, which the Alliance has forwarded to Endeavor for a
signature. Negotiation on wording is
likely to be needed, and George hopes to work with III and Endeavor at ALA to
reach agreement on the finalized version.
2. INN-Reach Features in Release 2001
When
a local site migrates to Release 2001 the following will be implemented:
Matching algorithm When local sites migrate to Release 2001,
only the first occurrence of the 001 will be sent to the central system, and
thus used in the overlay algorithm.
This could impact the sending of some CSU records.
When the central Prospector site is migrated to
Release 2001 the following will be implemented:
Encoding Levels 3 and
4 Encoding Levels 3 and 4 will now be regarded in
the record match algorithm. With the
inclusion of encoding levels 3 and 4 in the INN-Reach encoding groups, each
Prospector library must re-send all records with these codes. George will work with each library to
schedule the re-send of records once Prospector is migrated to Release
2001. File creation and export
instructions were distributed in the Catalog/Reference Committee Minutes of
April 19, 2001.
Once both the central and local site have
migrated to Release 2001 the following will be implemented:
Call number
changes Call
number changes in the local system will automatically bubble up to Prospector
once both the central and local sites have migrated to Release 2001.
George will notify all 14 Prospector libraries of this. Once both the central and local site are on
Release 2001, local sites can eliminate any special procedures they had in
place to cause call number changes to bubble up to the central site.
URL functionality With Release 2001,
INN-Reach will display URLs for any contributing library that is on 2001. URLs may be in the bibliographic record, the
item record, or both. In order to
trigger the URL display after BOTH central and local are on 2001, each library
will need to re-send to Prospector all bibliographic and item records that
contain URLs. After all 14 libraries
are on 2001 we will analyze the default display and then determine the final
display in Prospector that we want. The default display constant is
"Access online version".
3. NetLibrary
NetLibrary recently cut 90 out of 190 production
positions. NetLibrary has moved from
scanning the physical book to requiring an electronic version in standard ebook
markup from the publisher. Ebooks
produced this way will have a different appearance. George has requested the set of bibliographic records for owned
titles but has not yet received a response from netLibrary.
The Alliance patron-driven purchase model for
netLibrary has been turned off and the bibliographic record load halted at
28,000 records. The Alliance directors
will determine a new model, deciding between: 1) modified patron driven model,
limited by publisher or subject; and, 2) selector-driven model, with all
Alliance members working in a task force to advise the Alliance on
purchases. After the purchase model is
determined, the appropriate method for loading bibliographic records will be
determined. At this point the OCLC
files are not being loaded although the subscription has not been
canceled. Eventually we will probably
only want the records directly from netLibrary.
4. Advanced Keyword Searching—The Committee
voted that we recommend that Advanced Keyword Searching be purchased for
Prospector at a cost of approximately $20,000.
George will carry forward our recommendation.
5. Use of Bcode 3 “g”
Libraries are requested not to use the code “g”
in Bcode 3 unless they are submitting records on behalf of the Prospector
system. Thus :
Do not code any record as a “Prospector
resource” (bcode3 = g) unless it is ONLY for the electronic version AND is
available ONLY to Prospector members.
For a “Prospector resource” do NOT combine multiple physical formats on
a single bibliographic record.
There are quite a number of records with
incorrect Bcode3 “g” in Prospector. The
Committee is working to identify these records and work with the local
libraries to get them coded correctly.
4. GoldRush—The tie-in between Gold Rush
and Prospector issues will be discussed at a future meeting.
5. Denver Public Library Photodigitization
Records—The Committee needs to discuss the loading of the DPL
Photodigitization records and its impact on Prospector since at this time
Prospector does not allow limitation by format.
6. Prospector Conference—The idea of a
Prospector Conference has been suggested.
This would be an opportunity to update personnel in all participating
libraries on new features of the system.
