PROSPECTOR CATATLOG/REFERENCE COMMITTEE
Minutes
of the meeting of March 23, 2000
The
Catalog/Reference Committee met on March 23rd at the Alliance from 1pm to 3:30
PM. Present were: Machovec, Beam,
Reed, Garrison, Heck, Arnesen, Jones and Nicols.
1. Update on
the load of CARL records into Prospector
Indexing and
overlay problems occurred when a large number of records were loaded from CARL
to the test Prospector database. III is working on the fixes. CUB sent 10,000
test records which will be used to test record overlay and the matching
algorithm. After the 150,000 Denver Public Library records are re-loaded,
George will let the Committee know that they are ready for testing. The Alliance is filtering out the null
characters which were previously identified as a problem in migrating the
records.
2. Migration
to Release 2000 by Prospector
Prospector
will be upgraded to the Release 2000 software on May 12th. Most of the libraries in Prospector are
already on Release 2000. As part of the
Committee’s role of testing new software, Bill Garrison & Lois Jones will
test the matching algorithms using CUB and DU records. Since Jefferson County is not on Release
2000, Vicki Nichols will test to see insure that Prospector still works well
with the Release 12 software. In the DU
database Lois Jones has noticed problems with rotated subject headings on
Release 2000: i.e. subject "Women--Ireland--Social
conditions" when clicked on, will send patron to
"Ireland--Women--Social Conditions."
Apparently this is a known bug in Release 2000.
3. Upcoming
meeting with Ann Rakes from III.
Ann Rakes
from III is coming to Denver on April 20 and will meet with the
Circulation/Document Delivery Committee in the morning and the
Catalog/Reference Committee in the afternoon.
Questions we
will have for her include:
-856 problem
in InnReach: is it being addressed, and if so, How?
-Release 2000
known bugs
-Will
Advanced Searching (AVS) be available for InnReach?
-Will
Authority Control ever be available for InnReach?
-Use of
BCode3 “g” “System Wide Resource.” Can we add other Bcode3s and will they work
in the same manner?
-Clarification
on title matching in matching algorithm.
How is title match normalization done?
4. NetLibrary
Record Load Update
CUB has
ordered a set of 6,911 OCLC records that represent netLibrary e-books. These records will be coded with BCODE3 ‘g’
‘Electronic Resource.’ They will be
loaded into the CUB catalog and forwarded up to Prospector. In Prospector,
BCODE3 ‘g’ results in the replacement of the local holdings listings (i.e.
"2 Prospector Libraries have this item") with the message ‘Electronic
resource’ which is not a hotlink. A
subfield z will be added to the 856 field saying "View Electronic
Book" which will display under the Electronic Resource note, and will be
hotlinked to the e-book in netLibrary.
Non-Alliance libraries, such as Jefferson County and Colorado College,
will only have access to the netLibrary books if they have purchased the titles
themselves. If non-owning patrons click on "View electronic book"
they will be blocked. Home users,
unless they are going through a campus approved proxy server, will also not
have access. Access to netLibrary
records is controlled by IP filtering.
The Alliance now owns 4500+ netLibrary titles, and more are added as
users ask to view them. Asking to
"View electronic book" in Prospector will operate just the same as
doing so at the local library level by going into the netLibrary database. When CUB actually loads the records we will
test how these records actually appear and what the implications are for all
Prospector member libraries.
5.
Enhancements
The Committee
reviewed the previously distributed list of proposed Prospector enhancements
and deleted some and added others. The final list will be distributed by George
Machovec via the Alliance website. (George has already done so as of March 24).
George will send the list to Anita Cook and Nancy Nathanson for inclusion into
the master list of InnReach enhancements. The Catalog Reference Committee added
to the enhancement list the request for the feature to link back to the local
library’s serial checkin grids from Prospector. This could to possibly reduce the necessity for all the Partners
buttons on the local library screens. The link back would be with each “Library
Has” statement.
6. CARL
training
Judith Heck
indicated that DPL would like their Prospector training to be linked closely to
the actual loading of the Denver Public Library records into Prospector. We have until the end of June to get on the
training schedule at DPL for July-Aug-Sept.
7. Next
Cat/Ref Meeting: April 20th with Ann
Rakes at the Alliance.
Next
after: May 18th at the Alliance.
