Prospector Catalog/Reference Committee

January 29, 2002

The Prospector Cataloging/Reference Committee met at the Alliance office on Tuesday, January 29th, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Present were: George Machovec, Helen Reed, Lois Jones, Veronika Albl, Janet Lee, Carol Perkins, Cynthia Wilson, and Sandy Arnesen.

Updates/Announcements

New members were introduced and given information on the charge to the committee.  Instructions were given on how to subscribe to the Prospector Cat/Ref Listserv and the INNReach Listserv.

Lois Jones announced that DU Law in running release 2001 of the III software.

George said there has been an expression of interest in joining Prospector from Ft. Collins Public Library.  There will be a meeting on February 7th to discuss the possibilities with them.  The meeting will include representatives from the Alliance, CSU, UNC and Ft. Collins Public Library.  Some of the Marmot academic libraries have also expressed interest in joining Prospector.

Endeavor Update

George met with Jane Burke and Vern Kope at ALA midwinter.  They promised a new schedule for Endeavor integration—testing first on bibliographic records without any attached records. It is still unclear whether the records will bubble into Prospector or into a test system.  George Machovec will post a message to the list when test records are in Prospector.  The schedule for bringing up Endeavor libraries on Prospector has been pushed back at four to five months.

netLibrary

The purchase of netLibrary by OCLC has been finalized.

CSU has FTPed the netLibrary records from CU Boulder.

George Machovec sits on the netLibrary Advisory Council, which met preceding ALA Midwinter.  At that meeting he learned that OCLC got netLibrary with no debt.  They discussed how to make netLibrary feasible on an ongoing basis.  The company is down to 125 employees and may cut 25 more.  It will remain in Boulder, but move to a less expensive facility.  It will focus on front-list titles and will reduce the number of publishers it does business with.  Discussion was held on how OCLC plans to price the product in the future.  They have gone with a model similar to netLibrary’s past model.  Cataloging will be moved from netLibrary to OCLC.

It was suggested that Bill Garrison and George Machovec talk with OCLC about existing problems with netLibrary cataloging records, and the clean up and enhancement Bill had to do on netLibrary records.

Gold Rush Staff Module

George gave a description of Gold Rush for new members.  The staff module is available in test mode for Alliance members to look at.

Electronic Resources Best Practices

The list of issues from the December meeting was presented.  The group will meet on February 28th to prioritize the issues for discussion.  The committee will first look at ISSNs and how they index in Prospector, the location of URL information, and public display notes.

INN-Reach Enhancement Process

The Prospector list of enhancements will be discussed at the March meeting.  We must look at our enhancement list from last year and check it against what has been implemented in the 2002 release.  George will send out the list the first of February and wants responses back by February 18th.

Helen will FAX 2002 INN-Reach enhancements to Carol White, Veronika Albl, and Janet Lee since they are not III libraries and can’t get to the CS-Direct site.
