Spanish LanguageRoundtable October 5, 2007
Present: Ellen Metter ,Auraria; Peggy Keeran ; DU, Mike Eitner , DPL; Christina Martinez , UCCS; RoseNelson, Alliance; Alan Charnes , Alliance.
Acquiring materials – Most of the discussion focused on this area. Some ofthose present work with languages in which they have no background thus theyrely heavily on faculty suggestions for purchases. Various vendors and means ofacquiring materials were discussed. Thosepresent were mostly working with small materials budgets. DPL’s collecting ofmaterials is quite different from what the academic libraries are collectingand they have a large budget that focuses on Spanish materials. DPL has thechallenge of looking for low level, low literacy adult materials. These arehard for them to find.
Some specific vendorsmentioned:
Schoenhof’s – DU and UCCShave used. Have a searchable website www.schoenhofs.com
LatinAmerican Book Store - latinamericanbooks.com - DU has set up some small approval plans withthem focusing on literature. They are selecting what they consider best. Theydon’t have a good website.
PedroEstiva – Sara Williams from Wyoming(not present) – asked if anyone had experience with this vendor. Nobody presenthad any.
MikeEitner handed out a helpful list he had compiled about where to find Spanishmaterials. In particular he mentioned Multi-Cultural Books and Videos www.multiculturalbooksandvideos.com
DPLsends two people every year to Feria Internacional del Libro in Guadalajara. This is avery large conference for Spanish publications. They go and review materialsthen use vendors to do their purchasing. The ones they use most are: BilingualPublications – Linda Goodman mentioned specifically; Chulainn – located in Colorado; Lectorum –have a big presence at FIL. Brodart and Baker & Taylor are also at FIL.
Críticas– some use it as a selection source.
Databases - Some general discussion about databases. Someare doing the trial of Océano Dígital, but nobody had used it yet. Otherdatabases mentioned were Informe and Fuente Académica available on EBSCO.
Noneof us had really looked at statistics for use in these databases.
Language learning resources- DPL currentlysubscribes to Rosetta Stone but the company plans to cease any remote accessand wants to limit to cd-rom use only. DU has been in conversation with RosettaStone as well. Pimsleur materials can be purchased as e-audio books throughNetlibrary. They publish a wide variety of materials for many languages. DPLhas these materials on cassette and cd, and they are very popular.
Shared collection development – Some discussion abouthow this might work if we were to initiate such a project. Could possibly havedifferent libraries focusing on different geographic areas; identify literaryprize winners for different libraries to buy. Really need more input from thoselibraries in the state that are collecting more comprehensively. Rose Nelsonwill follow up with those places. (Email communication was received from DougErnest at CSU as a result of Rose’s request). (Mike Eitner gave Peggy Keeran acontact at Stanford. Follow up email from Peggy provided some information aboutother projects)
It was suggested that we puttogether a list of selectors and what languages they work with at the differentlibraries. Could be a useful contact list to provide assistance.
Periodicals – DU is working on creating a browsing collection of periodicals in avariety of languages.
